OBITUARY
MAORI WAR VETERAN (Pur Pross Association.) AUCKLAND, last night. One of the oldest Maori .war veterans, Mr. Edward J. W. Gregory, of Ponsonby, has died, aged 94 years. Taking part in the Maori War in Taranaki from IS6R onward, he was one of the very few survivors of the White Cliffs massacre in 18(59 and was the last person to shako hands with the Rev. John Whitcley shortly before he was murdered. An old resident of Hawefa, Mr Robert William Sargeant, died' on March 15 at the age of 8(5 years. lie 'was born at Battle, in (Sussex, and learned watchmaking. At an early age lie went to Dome mm, in British •Guiana, to join his brother in business. Mr Sargeant was official meteorologist at Dcmerara, and while there was married. He came to New Zealand in 1878, and started in business at Cambridge, going to Hawera •about 40 years ago, where he filled many positions.
