WAIROA BOROUGH
MEETING OF COUNCIL (Herald Correspondent.) At the Wairoa Borough Council meeting there were present the Mayor and Ors. W. J. Clarke, 11. M. Christensen, W. 11. Flint, G. deV. Robinson, J. 0. Scott, L. E. Galbraith, M. J. Gemmell and 1). 'Glengarry. This being the first meeting m the new year, tne Mayor tendered bis best wishes for the success of 1934. It was reported that the Fire Underwriters’ Association had asked for a, map of the borough water supply. This is to be put in hand at once. The Mayor reported on various happenings since the previous meeting, including the hunger marchers’ visit, the trip of the Governor-General and Lady Bledisloe to Waikaremoana, and the visits of the Diomede and the Rarotongan party. The Mayor also mentioned that to his great surprise he had been presented with a gift of a native dress, purse, and strings of beautiful shells by Makea Aviki, Vaine Takau Rio, and Tere, which he greatly appreciated. On the motion of Cr. Glengarry, the economy committee's report was expunged from the minutes as its value was not now apparent, all works having been carried out very economically. The motion met opposition from Cr. Robinson, but was carried.
The reports of the reserves, health, cemetery, water, electricity and works committees were taken as read, and the recommendations adopted. The Mayor reported on the cost of the carnival week, £lO, as against receipts, £SO. The borough now possessed a number of colored lights, and these are to be added to later, and an attempt made to Have the. Show and races held in the same week next year. The Racing Club dates for 1935 are January 31 and February 2. i The Mayor mentioned complaints he had received respecting the absence Of facilities at the camping site, and said it would pay the council to spend £IOO there. Cr. Glengarry said he had drawn out plans, and £26 would be sufficient at present to improve matters. It was decided that the reserves and works i committee should go into the question of a detailed programme to be brought up at the April meeting. The correspondence in regard to the state of the old courthouse was com | mented upon. Cr. Robinson was asked to take in hand the question of forward- , ing to the Justice Department Cr. Glengurry’s estimate, £1660, for a new I courthouse, and the Mayor is to take up the matter with the Minister on his next visit to Wellington. A return .was tabled at the request of Cr. Galbraith showing that the cost of erecting -public conveniences in Marine parade was £214, the revenue to date being £3 14s sd, sufficient to pay the annual interest on the cost of a work of public utility, Steps are to be taken to enforce the registration of dogs in the borough. It was reported that the borough valuations had been completed, and it was decided to send to Gisborne parti culars of tar-sealing footpath improvements, water reticulation, and electric supply so til at the persons benefiting should be required to pay a fair share of the cost. Cr. Glengarry was accorded a vote of thanks for what lie had done in supervising the tar-sealing operations. The Stock Auctioneers’ Association asked for some repairs to the saleyard roads, but it was pointed out that the council did not now receive the auctioneers’ fees. However, it was decided that the road would be attended to. It was decided to ask the Public Works Department to further consider the opening up of the old stock route to the yards till the railway is in use, and also to suggest that in "future the Stock Auctioneers’ Association should take out annual licenses with the Borough Council. Permission was granted to the District High School to hold sports on the new sports ground on March 21. The Mayor is to attend the Municipal Conference on March 14. The council declined to take over 11 sections of an estate in satisfac tion of rates totalling £l3O. A special meeting is to be held on March 7 regarding tar-sealing and tenders.
