THE “RASPBERRY”
BAND CONTEST JUDGE DEPLORABLE INCIDENT (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. A correspondent signing himself "Veteran Bandsman,” in a letter to the Dominion, criticises the action of certain bandsmen in connection with the customary marph played by the massed bands under the baton of the contest judge at the conclusion of the quickstep competition. He says: "The judge, Captain George Buckley, one of New Zealand’s best band conductors, gave the signal to start. The air was rent with the most hideous discordant sounds imaginable. A small percentage of the' crowd thought it funny, hut 10,000. at least, thought it a dastardly and despicable act on the part of a ’section of disgruntled and disappointed competitors. It was not a secret in certain quarters that the episode was prearranged) apd that the ‘raspberry’ was tq be meted out to the judge.
