PICNIC GATHERING AN ENJOYABLE OUTING Week-end. weather conditions so lar this year ha ve as a rule been nothing to feeL pleased about, lint on Saturday afternoon better conditions could not have been desirod for the Here Sports Club’s annual gathering. A cloudless sky; prevailed throughout the day, but at no time was the weather more than pleasantly warm, and the function offered unalloyed enjoyment to a. very large gathering. The function took place on a portion of Mr. A. J. Harris’ grounds, where the conformation of the ground provided a natural grandstand, enabling patrons, it they wished, to follow all. events from their cars. Many townspeople took the opportunity of spending a pleasant and interesting* day in the country, and the attendance was even larger than usual. As : is customary with country sports meetings, horse events predominated, but the club provided something of interest for everyone, and the programme as a whole was an excellent one. Numerically, the entries were particularly good, there being as many as 24 entries in some of the horse events, and competition was usually very close. In other branches of sport, too, the entries were good, and miscellaneous events attracted much interest. Throughout the meeting it was obvious that the club possessed' a very capable and energetic committee, and the whole programme was put through with a minimum of delay, and with complete satisfaction to competitors and spec--tat Ors alike. In particular, much credit was due to the club’s very able secretary, Mr. J. A. Wilkie, who carried out his duties in a most efficient manner. The gathering was advertised as a picnic sports meeting, and so it proved to be, the majority of the patrons bringing lunch baskets and spending a very pleasant day in the open, with a well diversified programme to hold their interest until the last event had heen contested.. Results of the sports events were as follow :■ — Open Flag Race (24 entries). —A. C. Bellerby, 1; J. Gardner, 2. Pony Jump (7 entries). —Miss D. Rutledge, 1; J. Gardner, 2.
