SUCCESSFUL FLOWER SHOW (Mnralil Correspondent.) Quite tlu'. most successful Flower Show of recent years took place in the Matawai Hall oil Saturday. A revival of interest in the cookery section by the ladies of tlic district resulted in a larger number of entries. Mr. Mills, To. Karaka, adjudicated in this section, and gave his decisions on points, commenting very iavorably on three ' classes, particularly—camp-oven ( bread, sponge rake, and meringues. Miss Mortleman was the steward in charge. Mrs. W. 11. Shaw and Miss McLean, Otoko, judged the flowers, and Mr. Craig, Motu the vegetable section. Although there were fewer entries in the latter classes, there were many fine specimens, the drumhead cabbages showing little effect from the white butterfly pest. The children’s section was better than usual, although teachers from surrounding districts, with the exception of llomebrook School, owing to the usual rush of work attending reopening of school and preparation of schemes, found no time for show work. Mrs. 11. Fleming was steward for this section. A sweets stall was conducted by Misses Smith and Emmerson, a produce stall by Mrs. A. Taylor, and luncheon and afternoon tea were ably controlled by Mesdames Korte (2J and Bulst, with several willing helpers. Misses Calcott and Korte controlled the children’s fishpond. Mrs. C. V. Smith with the help of Mrs. H. E. Burgess had a busy time taking entries, one settler being responsible for over 40. All the space available. was used to display the abundance of flowers.
