N.Z. TROUT FISHING
AN ENTHITST A ST’S R EGR RTS SYDNEY, Feb. 7. Sir .Joilu MncFarland, Oluincellor of lhe Melbourne University, returned by the ,Marnma yesterday from a trout fishing holiday in New Zealand. Sir Jo'hii.MacFaiTiind hns engaged in trout fishing in New Zealand, at intervals, since JSSI, and regrets that the size of the trout is decreasing, and has done so gradually during the last 50 years. He attributes this decrease to the fact that there are more mouths to feed, and that more people are fishing.
Since flax had become an important product, and had been cleared -’rom the banks of the rivers and swampy places, he said, the floods •overed up the deep holes, and played more havoc generally. This made the .rout’s task of finding food and inciter difficult. This in turn prevented its growth.
