Air. E. L. Walton, fi.M., who has boon acting as relieving magistrate at Napier and Hastings this week, returned to Gisborne last night. Mr. and Airs. Bryan Todd, Wellington. have left for an extended motor tour of Hawke’s Bay, Gisborne and Auckland.
Mr. H. Valentine, chief accountant of the New Zealand railways, was yesterday elected president of the New Zealand 'Society of Accountants. —P.A. Air. T. B. Clark has been appointed superintendent of the Alasterton Fire Brigade. Until two years ago, Air. Clark was deputy superintendent of the Wellington brigade. Over 30 applications were received from various parts of the Dominion, at id one from Australia. The Rev. R. B. Spence, 8.A., who has been stationed at the Matawhero Presbyterian charge during the past four months, leaves on Alonday to resume his studies at Dunedin. The Rev. W. A. Porter, of Ormond, who has been appointed to the charge, takes over his hcw r duties next week.

At fit. Andrew’s Presbyterian Hall, Hastings, recently, there was an exceptionally large gathering of members of the diuix-h congregation and others to farewell the Rev. D. J. A. Shaw, who is departing on a visit to England, via Suez. The hull was packed to overflowing to wish Air. Shaw “bon voyage.” Mrs. and Miss Shaw were also present. I lie hall was beautifully decorated with orange cannas and dahlias and the stage was arranged as a drawing-room. Air. Cecil Duff was in the chair, and presented Air. Shaw with a very substantial cheque, speaking also of the work Airs, and Miss Shaw had done amongst the congregation On rising to reply Air. Shaw was greeted with applause. He spoke of the happiness he had found in his • ministry m Hastings .and the friends be had made, and lie thanked everyone for their kindness to him. A letter was read from Rev. R. B. Gosnell on behalf of the Aletiiodisj Church, wishing Mr. Slmv a very enjoyable holiday in Palestine.
