GERMANY’S ATTITUDE
REPLY TO AUSTRIA TEXT OF BERLIN’S REPLY BERLIN, Feb. 3. In view of Austria’s attitude, the German Government has published the full text 'of its reply to Austria’s demand that the flood of arms, ammunition, money and propaganda across the border from Germany should be checked. It was previously reported that Germany had rejected the complaints and declared, that.the problem could not be solved- Internationally. • • Maintaining that the Austrian com : . plaints were one-si*ied, and that the use of the word “conflict” incorrectly described Austro-Cerman relations, .the reply adds that Austria cannot expect Germany to regard with indifference a system of government that nullifies and suppresses everything which has given the German people new courage and confidence. . .
The Note denies that Germany is interfering in Austrian domestic affairs, and accuses Austria v of unreasonably stopping attempts to negotiate by HenHitler’s nominee at- the Embassy in Vienna, Ilerr T. Habicht. It says that Austria lias not yet reported what punishment, if any, was meted out to the murderers of Schumacher, the Gorman soldier who was shot down by Austrian frontier guards in November, and adds that the Lechfeld camp for Austrian Nazi refugees has been dissolved. Further, the reply denies that the inmates of the camp were concentrated on the Austrian border and denies that Nazis or the Government were smuggling arms to Austria. It regrets that Austria had appealed to other nations. The matter could not be solved by the League of Nations, as it was purely an internal Austrian affair.
