PUBLIC WORKS PAY
(To the Editor of the Herald.) Sir,—May I be permitted to make a few corrections through the columns of your valuable paper which no doubt may help to enlighten the general public to facts and not prattle given away by a certain section to gain their own ends. On reading various papers I have noted that speakers belonging to the hunger marchers and at various other unemployed demonstrations have told the public that 10s per day could not be made on stan- ' dard public 'works. This statement is incorrect, and for the information of those whose business it seems' to be to howl these jobs down, they should .make sure of their statements first. The writer has followed these works for .the past year and 10 months, and never once made less than the standard rate, and, may it be also added that there were no super men among the gangs, I worked in. During this time only one. gang of men made le3s than 10s a day. It would be sound reasoning to give any such work a go first before condemning it. Being a married man of B class and having no wish whatever To be away from home, I would be failing in my duty to my wife and children if I tried to live on what the dole provided for mo. Camp life is what you make it, and the man who trios* to make himself comfortable and does an honest day’s work has no need to fear, -but thoso wdio invariably are never content unless it is to find fault would be well advised to stop at home! In future any spokesman should endeavor to furnish his audience with facts which the public I am. sure will appreciate.—l am, etc., A. TRYER,
