OPOTIKI NEWS

ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY SOCIAL (Herald Correspondent.) I A social evening was given at Mrs. James Parkinson’s home, Waioeka road, on Tuesday by the members of the orchestra of the Opotiki Orchestral Society in honor of Mr. S. Pearce, of Opotiki, and Miss F. Mottram, Nukuhon, who are shortly to be married. The evening was extremely bright and lively, all members assisting, either by giving impromptu solos or joining in combined items. Mrs. J. T. Thompson won a question competition, and also a tennis wedding competition, Mr. G. Sloan being her partner, in the latter; and a kitchen utensil competition was won by Mrs. James Parkinson. Supper was provided by the lady members of the orchestra. Mr.•lan Thompson, conductor of the orchestra, presented Mr. Pearce with two very handsome cut-glass fruit bowls on behalf of himself and fellow-members, who all wished Mr. Pearce and. Miss Mottram a very happy future. Mr. Pearce replied, saying how very much he had enjoyed his association with the orchestra as one of its members for the past three years, and that he hoped he would long remain one. HEAVY RAIN CEASES The heavy rain which had been falling in the Opotiki district ceased on Tuesday evening, except for a few showers during the night. Wednesday was fine and great hopes were entertained that the weather would remain fine for the Show to-day. A report from the Whakatane district said that the Rangitaiki River was in flood, was nearly over the banks in places, and was still rising on Wednesday afternoon.
