Tin' party marched around the Square, and later a deputation waited on the Mayor, Mr A. E. Mansford, when permission was given for a street collection to be made in aid of the party to enable it to continue its mareh to Wellington. The deputation refuted statements made in Wellington that, relief workers in Public Works Department camps in the Gisborne district could earn £3 a week, It was stated that the unemployed were drafted into camps, and that it was compulsory for them to go, as relief work in the town had been stopped. A Palmerston North member of the deputation requested that the party should be assisted by the Central Relief Committee during its sojourn in Palmerston North, and that the Mayor should use his influence in having members of the party billeted, Air Mansford said that the funds of the relief committee had been collected for a definite end, and, as Mayor, he could not consider utilising them for any other purpose.
