CHINESE FEAR

MANCHU MONARCHY NEW CROP OF RUMORS

PEKIN, Dec. 24

Keen interest, mixed with apprehension. has been aroused by the Chinese reports that Colonel Kenzo Doiham, sometimes known as “Manchuria’s Colonel Lawrence,” has secretly arrived at the Japanese Concession in Tientsin.

Confirmation of Doihara’s presence in Tientsin is not available, but it is believed that lie lias left Mukden, where recently he was assigned to a special post in the Kwantung army. The report coincides with a fresh crop of rumors that President Pu 1 i will be declared Emperor of Manchuria early in 1934. Doiliara is credited with playing a prominent part in the events at Tientsin in November, 1931, which culminated in Henry Pu Yi being spirited to Dairen during a mysterious outbreak of rioting.

Henry Pu Yi, as he was known after his- deposition, as a boy, was the last Emperor of China before the Republic was proclaimed. The Japanese made him President of Manehukuo when Manchuria was wrested from the Chinese and became an independent State, and it is rumored in Harbin, will on January 8 proclaim. Manehukuo a monarchy and Pu Yi as its Emperor.
