ADVISED TO WITHDRAW

BRITISH IN FUKIEN SUPPRESSION OF REBELS ANOTHER CLASH REPORTED

(British Official Wireless.) Rec. noon. RUGBY, Jan. 3

The Chinese Government having decided to take warlike action to suppress the rebellion in the province of Fukien, requested the Britisli charge d’affaires at Pekin on December 30 that Britisli subjects in Amoy, Foochow, and the neighborhood should be warned to withdraw to the islands of Kulangsu and Nantai respectively for safety. About 300 British subjects live in the province of Fukien, of whom a great majority normally reside in Amoy and Foochow. The British consuls at Amoy and Foochow have been instructed to advise, at their discretion, British subjects to withdraw to places of safety.

The fact that the advice of the Chinese Government has thus been passed on to tho British subjects in no way absolves the former from due responsibility to do its utmost to afford protection and avoid damage to British property, not only at Amoy and Foochow, but throughout the province. 'Severe fighting has begun in the neighborhood of Pekin between the Government forces and rebellious troops under General Liu-Kuci Tang, who revolted, at Chihcheng, eastern Charhar, on Christmas Day and sacked the city.

The insurgents, totalling about 5000, clashed with the Government divisions ,ar Kaoliying, J 5 miles northward of Pekin, on New Year's Day, the engagement resulting in heavy casualties on both sides.

After plundering the town, the rebels retreated within the demilitarised area, where the Government troops were prevented by the terms of the Tangku armistice, from following.
