Miss Anne Gaddum, who lias Men on a holiday visit to England, returned to Gisborne this week accompanied by her cousin, Miss Mary Dunkerley, of Altrinchan, Cheshire, England, who is to spend a holiday in New Zealand. Six Ouiders and three Guides from the Poverty Bay division of Girl Guides will be attending the Auckland provincial group camp, consisting of seven groups comprising about 300 Guides and Guiders, to be held from January 3 tc 13. The camp site is two miles from Muriwai on the West Coast, about 29 miles north of Auckland. On Thursday the Misses Orr, Kannkanaia, entertained some of their friends at a picnic party in the To' Karaka district, a delightful spot being chosen. An engagement is announced between Thomas Richard, only son of Mr. and Mrs. T. Saunders, of Glen Oroua, and Edna May, elder daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. Phillips, of Gisborne.

An enjoyable cabaret dance was held at Lo Grand Cafe on Thursday evening, and although there was not a huge attendance all present spent a very jolly time, the cold weather prevailing making conditions ideal for dancing. Wauehop, AI. Dobson, and R. Sherratt. Surprise Party at Makarori. On Christmas Eve Aliss Nancy Cowan was paid a very jolly surprise visit by several of her friends at her home at Makarori. The house was already prettily decorated for Christmas, the drawing-room looking particularly charming with its arrangement. of paper streamers and bells, and balloons to orange, gold, and lemon, tonings to match the colors of the furnishings, intermingled with bush greenery and ferns. Dancing wtts much enjoyed, music being provided by a gramophone, and extras played by some of the guests. Among those present were Airs J. L. Tennis Tournament The annual tennis tournament held under the auspices of the Poverty Bay and East Coast Lawn Tennis Association at the Gisborne club’s courts at Kaiti attracted a large number of entries, and opened on Tuesday in ideal weather, the following day also being line, hut marred by a strong westerly gale, but early on Thursday afternoon, when the matches were drawing to the semi-final stage, heavy rain set in and the matches had to be abandoned, much to the disappointment of players and spectators. A noticeable feature of the courts was the attire* of many of the men players, who had sacrificed smartness for comfort by wearing shorts. Among the onlookers were Mr. and Mrs. I. S. C, Dalgairns (Ruatoria), Mr. and Mrs. R. Barker, Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Wilson, Mr. and Mrs. R. K. Barton (Ruakituri), Mr. and Mi's. J. G. Nolan, Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Nolan (Ruakituri), Mr. and Mrs. 0. R.
