Diabetics at Dinner
: ME. H. G. Wells and about 200 other j guests sat down to enjoy tho | festival dinner of King’s College j Hospital not long ago in London. But while the rest of the company ate a. normal meal, Mr. Wells and nine' fellow-sufferers from diabetes sat at a special table and chose their dishes from a special menu warranted not to aggravate their complaint. Marginal annotations on the bill-of- , fare tojd Mr. Wells'and his triends just how much carbo-hydrates they were consuming. Each knew his or her allowance, and must not exceed it. ' Grape-fruit introduced the banquet. Mr. Wells (with Dr. R. D. Lawrence, Lead of the diabetic department of King’s at his elbow) was allowed to oat that. But the menu warned him that he was thereby consuming live grammes of carbo.-hydnitos. Consomme followed. That was good enough for Mr. AVells, too—but Dr. Lawrence forbade the cheese straws that went with it. Sole, again, passed diabetic scrutiny, though served with a special sauce. ' Air. Molls and his friends were allowed lamb chops like the other diners, but they had to have beans instead of peas. Their potatoes oach weighed two ounces, and contained 30 grammes of carbo-hydrates. Dr. Lawrence said, "Yes," when his patients were offered quails in aspic. But he brought down his ban on ordinary peche melba; it had to be a special mplba.
