EDUCATION

DR, C. NORWOOD’S VIEWS

LONDON, Dec. 20,

“I end my life as a teacher convinced that the success of a schholmaster is based upon personality,” declared Dr. Cyril Norwood, who will shortly resign the headmastership of Harrow to become president of St. John’s College, Oxford. “I have often been asked,” continued Dr. Norwood, ‘‘what better use could be made of the 15,000 Latin lessons in the average schoolboy’s life. That is only part of a larger question —what is the right education for boys between 11 and 1(5 years, when they do not intend to continue their studies after 1(5. Personally, I would first give them a sound education, based on English culture, geography, history, and literature, with less mathematics, and a different kind of science, a thorough training of the hand, eye, and ear, and finally, an understanding of the working of the modern world, and the boys’ place in it. A considerable minority of public schools could and would bo better educated without Latin, but until the changes are realised, I would leave Latin in its privileged position.”
