MOTU NEWS

(Herald Correspondent.) The weather has been very unsettled during the holidays, the only tine day being Boxing Day. The wind at times reached gale force, with heavy showers of rain.

Mr. and Mrs. E. I‘. Fisher have returned from Puha, where they spent the Christmas holidays as guests of Mrs. H. Richmond, who is now spending a few days in Motu. —Mrs. \V. Fisher is staying .with her daughter. Mrs. T. Tyerman.—Mrs. East (Wellington) and Mr. and Mrs. F. H. Bull are spending the holidays with Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Wright.—-Mr. and Mrs. G. S. Bridge have returned to Hinemoa after spending the Christmas holidays with Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Hutchinson, Gisborne. —Mr. Fulford Humfrey has arrived in Motu to commence fanning his property on the Whakarau road.

In spite of counter-attractions and pouring rain, the Motu Hall was well filled when “The Bohemians” presented the. opening concert of their tour. Half the proceeds were given to the local branch of the E.S.A., the committee of which is very grateful for the necessary financial help. Mr. d. Carrington Wellby apologised for the absence of Miss Glady Fanning (soprano), who was unable to come to Motu. Mr. Wellby was in splendid voice and his two songs, “Just Keepin’ On” and “We'll Travel the Road,” with Mr. Enroll Allott playing the violin obligato, were the star items of the programme. \ Mr. Allott's talented rendering of “Spannischc Tanze,” was a treat and he was recalled twice. The comedy clement was well sustained by Messrs. E. Nicholson, .T. Mercer, and P. Hockley. Miss Nancy Caie, with “The Bohemians Four,” was a great success in “The Pride of the Pier” and re-1 ecived a well deserved encore. Miss! Madeline Lawford in her song j “Meadowsweet” and as the official accompanist deserves the greatest. ! praise. Mr. R. Nicholson's rendering 1 of “Take a Pair of Sparkling Eyes” l received tumultuous applause nnd lie responded with the old favorite t “Sally Horner.” Local “hits” in, the “Goodnight Chorus Medley”— j reference being made to the removal of the hotel to Matawai—and the ( finale, “Speedwell,” brought an excellent, programme to a close. The members of the company were entertained at supper after the performance, when Mr. Wellby thanked Mesdamcs Wright, Arthur, Boys, liar-! greaves, Jackson, and Messrs. Donovan, Wright, and Boys, for hospitality and help given, the company singing “For They Are Jolly Good. Fellows.”
