A DUEL AVERTED
BARCELONA, Nov. 1
A. duel with swords, which was to havo been fought yesterday morning between the Mayor of Barcelona, Dr. Aiguader, and Renor Planes, editor of a satirical weekly, was averted at the last moment by a reconciliation and a written declaration by both parties that honor had been satisfied. After a bitter controversy between the Mayor, writing in the daily newspapers, ami Renor Planes in the columns of his weekly, which culminated in the wrecking of the latter’s printing plant by a group of armed men, the Mayor sent a challenge to Renor Planes.
The affair had become the talk of the town. Though both men worn closely watched by the police, who had orders from the Governor-General to prevent the encounter, they were able early yesterday morning to elude observation. It is stated that neither had ever before used a sword.
