When the steamer Tymeric, which arrived at Port Chalmers on Saturday, from Nauru Island and Lyttelton with phosphates, was at Cuba in September the revolution there was in progress. Difficulty was experienced in finding a port where work was not held up by the revolution, but the. Tymeric eventually loaded a cargo of sugar at Artilla and at Mantanras for Hongkong. The ship's crew saw the debris of the railway offices and other public buildings which had been looted and destroyed by the rcvolutionaries. While the ship was loading, .word was received that revolutionaries from the interior intended to march on Mantanras/ but the Tymeric was able to ship all her cargo and to sail before the ■ armed force arrived. After discharging at Hongkong the Tymeric proceeded to Nauru Island, where she loaded for Lyttelton and Port Chalmers. A Dannevirke resident who has been in a relief camp on tho plains between Mt. Ruapehu and Taupoi speaks in glowing terms, says the Advocate, of the treatment accorded the men by those in charge. They are, according to his story, by iio means overworked; the food is on”a liberal scale, varied and appetising, and every consideration is shown tho men in regard to working when the weather is wet/for even threatening. That the conditions were congenial to our informant was shown by the fact that his hardest task was to keep down his weight, which had jumped up surprisingly under the congenial and restful camp conditions—by having to indulge in walking exercises. The men are comfortably housed in spacious tents with boarded floors—two in each—and those who could net- accommodate themselves to their surroundings were the exception.
