BOXING

FRANKLIN AND OXLEY PROPOSED TITLE MATCH Advice has been received in Gisborne ot' a proposal by the Napier (Boxing Association to match doc Franklin with Ted Oxley for the lightweight title at an early date. The Napier association is understood to have made application to the New Zealand Boxing Council for permission to stage a title match between the pair. Recently, Joe Franklin ran very close to beating Oxley in a 10-round tight in Hawke’s Baiy, his ruggedness ■and steady forcing tactics enabling him to give a better account of himself against the Pahintua lightweight and New Zealand champion than he gave at Gisborne recently against Percy Hawes, of Christchurch. The Gisborne fighter is looked on as being near the to’p of his probable development, but he would only have to improve slightly to be more than a match for any boxer in the -country in his weight range. Franklin is looked on in Hawke’s Bay as the most suitable opponent for a champion of Oxley’s type, who is inclined to let the fighting come to him, especially when the title is at stake. In Franklin, he will meet once again a scrapper who believes in carrying the tight to his opponent,!-and if the title match iis sanctioned by the 'boxing council, it should be worth something to the Napier association.
