The “ Education of the Whole Man ’ was the subject of Mr Baldwin address w-hen he spoke at Queen’s University, Belfast!,'after receiving the honorin';,' _ degree 1 of'LB.D. ■' . “That, free mingling of the young mind-on.the river, on the football field, ami in other places,” h.e said, ‘‘is an essential..process to. lit you lor the big world outside., or, if I may put ii in another way, that constant friction which polishes and smooths the rough edges of one’s mind’and. which helps all of our bearings to function that we may do our work among all kinds of ineu—that complete education is a constant protest against the lop-sided man, against the mere specialist, whether it be in brain or in brawn. “They are both very useful in their places and in limited quantities, tout, after all, man is a social being. He lias lived in and through society, and it is as a social being among other human beings.that lie has to function.”
In a reference to “that muchrabused word, ‘gentleman,’ ” Mr Baldwin said the accumulation of knowledge was not. enough for the whole man. ‘ You want with it—and here again 1 think it is an essential qualification of the great word ‘gentleman’ in its best sense —-ability' to find guidance of • 'l»irit, guidance that enables you to delect in this world gold from dross.”
