HOLIDAY ATTRACTIONS

COUNTRY FIXTURES SPORTS, TENNIS, CRICKET Holiday attractions in Gisborne and the district ioi the Christmas week can be grouped mainly into three classes—sports meetings, tennis tournaments, and cricket. Of course, beaches, holiday rusorts and camping sites will be well patronised, providing the weather is suitable, but organised gatherings for the general public do not seem to be as numerous as in other years. Several country sports meetings will be held* while tennis tournaments will extend throughout the greater part of the week, and two representative cricket matches at Gisborne and Tokomaru Baywill cover four days. Bowlers are also catered for.

|i'he main sports attractions for Gisborne people and those in the adjacent country areas on Boxing Day will be the eleventh annual sports meeting to be held by the Kaitaratahi Sports Club at Scott’s Bush Reserve. It is an ideal picnicking place, with abundant shade, and the programme is varied and attractive enough to again secure a bigi crowd. Both professional and amateur athletes have entered in large numbers in a big variety of events, while there are some special features in the national dancing section, which always attracts a great deal of interest. The two main dancing classes will be the Poverty Bay sword dance championship for children under 12 years ana the Poverty Bay Sailor’s Hornpipe championship for those aged from 12 to 18 years. Five horse events are also on the programme. Holiday events, such as races for ladies and children are scheduled. Refreshments will be obtainable on the ground, and milk and hot water will be provided free. The Te Reinga Sports Club, incorporating the Tiniroto Sports Club, is holding! its annual sports meeting on Boxing Day, and this will bo the chief attraction for district horsemen. There i* a programme, of 21 horse events, while in addition there are to be races for the children. This is offered as an outing for campers who might use some the many excellent camping sites in the district.

The Gisborne tennis tournament is opening on Boxing Day and will continue during the week, while in addition a tournament at Ruatoria will attract a great deal of interest on the Coast. Bowlers will be attracted to Boxing Day tournaments, which are being held on the three greens in the town. On Wednesday, the Tolagp. Bay Sports

Club is holding its annual meeting at the I TJawa Domain, and it will be noted for the large variety of entertainment offered- The programme includes horse, professional cycling, running and chopping, national dancing and tug-of-war events. In all, a total of £ll4 is being offered in cash prizes. Wednesday will be marked by the commencement of the WellingtonPoverty Bay cricket match. It is the occasion of the annual visit of Doneghue’s team, and the game will last two days. On Friday and Saturday the visitors will go on to Tokomaru Bay to play a two-day match with Waiapu.

Swimmers will be catered for on Friday, when the Olympic Swimming Club will hold its first carnival of the season. The programme will be one of inter-club handicaps, including relay races for both men and ladies, and diving and water polo will be attractive features.
