BIG BUSINESS
MAILS AND TELEGRAPH ■WELL AHEAD OF. RECORD From the experiences of old hands in the Gisborne telegraphic branch of the post and telegraph service, to-day s business was a iong way ahead of that of any corresponding day in any previous year, in regard to the receipt and dispatch of telegrams, especially those bearing Christmas greetings. The special form' of greeting telegram issued by the Post and Telegraph Department this year has' proved most popular, and has been used* far more than was the old typo of prepared greeting. Without the Creed teletype machine, installed during the past year to cater for rushed of telegraphic work, the stall of the department in Gisborne would havte been swamped, but with the Creed “eating it up’’ at full capacity, the business flowed steadily through the offite. At 3.30 p.m. to-day, the number of telegrams handled had eclipsed any recent record for a full day’s business, and there were at-least four hours of the business dav to no, at that stage. In the postal division, likewise, the business was calculated to be well in excess of that of the corresponding day of last year. The inward mail to-day included 85 bags and 46 hampers of letters and parcels, including a large .English mail forwarded from Auckland. The sorting of the parcels was a long and airfuous job, even with an augmented staff in the parcels division.
