AVIATION IN RHODESIA
30-DAYS’ JOURNEY DONE IN THREE HOURS One of the first air taxi journeys made by an aeroplane of the Rhodesian and Nyasalaud Airways, Limited, which is being managed by Imperial Airways, has illustrated the advantage of air transport in undeveloped districts. The District Commissioner at Mongu was recently flown in a Puss Moth cabin aeroplane the 280 miles from Livingstone to Mongu in 2 hours 40 minutes —a journey which in other days has had to be made by river barge and has occupied three weeks. The barge in which the District Commissioner 1 has previously, made this journey is manned by 30 natives who paddle it along the open stretches of the river, carry it over rapids and round sandbanks and fend off an occasional pugnacious hippopotamus. The. method includes a nightly camp, with a certain amount of risk from snakes and crocodiles, and the unpleasant journey from Mongu to Livingstone and back usually costs £35. This three weeks’ voyage can now be made in three hours by aeroplane mt a cost, of, £2O return fare.
