The superintendent reported that no calls had been received during the month. The county engineer, Mr A. G. Smith, in addition to fully reviewing the state of the main highways, reported as follows to the County Council meeting: — “Waihua Valley road.—The lower end of this road I am having opened up for vehicular traffic. Owing to the serious ■damage by earthquake, tho proper regrading and repairs would prove very costly and there would bo no guarantee of the work standing after heavy rains, as the country traversed appears to be slipping towards the river continually. There seems to bo no practicable way to avoid the present route unless by deviation and sevei’al bridges over the Waihua River, which also would prove a very costly work. Waikare-Glenbrook proposed improvement.—ln company with the resident engineer of the Public Works Department, 1 again inspected this route. Proposals for bridging and metalling are now being reported on by the resident engineer.” Additional results of the proficiency examination are as follow: iuriroa.— Proficiency: Jean T.ane and I.
