ONE LONG HOP
AUCKLAND TO INVERCARGILL INCIDENTAL MAIL DELIVERY Hi connect ion with the non-stop flight of the Faith in Australia from Auckland to Invercargill, scheduled for Tuesday next, much interest, has been shown by collectors of firstHigh!: souvenirs in the form of air mail envelopes, and a supply of 25(1 of these envelopes made available in Gisborne was exhausted within two hours of their being placed on sale ,n! the Post Office. The delivery of a mail from Auckland to Invercargill is incidental to the Hight, which is intended to he it demonstration of the possibilities of time-saving by the use of planes in the Dominion. Nevertheless, it will rank as an important stage in the development' of air-mail .schemes in New Zealand, and for this reason the stamped envelopes doubtless will command a value well above their original cost, in years to come when collectors arc seeking additions to their albums. The fact that the carriage of mails from one end of the Dominion to the other by it non-stop Might will not materially improve conditions of dispatch generally, is recognised by postal officials and by the promoters of Tuesday’s project. The flight is really a demonstration of the powers of the monoplane Faith in Australia, ami should afford good publicity to the joyriding business which Mr Hilaries Him will conduct in the course of his Dominion lour. The opportunity to register another “ first-flight ’ ’ souvenir in the form of air mail envelopes was naturally one that collectors would not care to miss, and for this reason the plane will carry mails. it has not been suggested, for instance, tlitil this delivery will improve on existing communications between Gisborne and any other centre. Dispatch by the ordinary route will, in this case; secure delivery a day ahead of th * air mail project, for I o catch the dispatch in tin* Faith in Australia from Auckland letters will have to be posted this evening, and after arrival at. Auckland will spend nearly two days awaiting their dispatch by the plane. So far its Gisborne is concerned, the (light of the Faith in Australia represents no more than an opportunity to collectors to secure souvenirs of the non-stop journey. Holleetors all over New Zealand, including a number ft out Invercargill, no doubt, will gladh take the same opportunity, without cavilling at the conditions of the delivery, or the payment of an additional fee for the air mail stamp.
