STATUS OF IRELAND SIGNIFICANT DEBATE HAPPIER IN THE EMPIRE (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Received December 8, 3 p.m.) LONDON, Dec. 7. Mr. lie Valera secured profound attention in a crowded Senate when, after an! extensive speech thereon, the report of • tho Imperial Economic Consultation I Committee was approved without division. Mr. Connolly moved the approval of. the report, which, according to Mr. j Miiroy, marked the complete incorpora- i tiou of the Imperial idea in the Fiauna Fail philosophy, signifying either a fresh i stage in the rake’s progress or the evo- i lution of a superman. Ireland could not walk in tho commonwealth with one leg : and walk out with the other, and go in j opposite directions simultaneously. ; Mr. Dowdall discounted Mr. Miiroy's; remarks, and asserted that tho Free. State’s co-operation was purely votun- 1 ta.ry. ! Mr. Douglas considered that tho Free! State would he happier as a member ■ of the Empire than otherwise, hut every ! member liad a right to secede if it ■ desired, ft would he foolish for Ire- : land to do so. but if a majority do- J dared for a republic, all must he loyal : thereto. | Mr. lie Valera said the co-operatiou! indicated by the report was based on j absolute, equality of the parties, and their freedom to enter or leave the alii- I ance. Ireland, if such a step were ad- 1 vantageous, was prepared to co-operate on lines similar to Denmark, Holland, j France, or any other country, but she must be a free agent to co-operate or. secede. “Tho British Government ran away ' from my last dispatch,” lie said, “and has baulked us every time a question is put straight to it. It is almost incom-. prehcnsible that a British Minister should speak as Lord Hailsham spoke. Ho is guilty of the very type of interference with our constitutional development to which the dispatch referred. Tlic people , of the Free State will not tolerate it. j Either he forgets the Statute of West- I minster, or the Statute is a fraud on i the Dominion.”
