THEFT CHARGE FAILS
CAPTAIN EXONERATED “RATHER INDISCREET” (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 8. Albert George Baggett, master of the motor vessel Foxton, was charged in the Magistrate’s Court this morning with stealing £5 pounds, the property of the providore of the ship, Robert McGregor. 'l'lie ease was dismissed by Mr. E. D. Mosley, S.AL Buggett said he look the money from At■<Giegor’s pocket to prevent him from drinking. To, evidence, Baggett said McGregor had. returned to the ship very drunk. “He fell down the stairs to start with, and took a long time to find the lies hole,” said the witness. lie, took the money to see if lie could keep McGregor out of hotels so that the ship would get away on time. It, was very important that the ship should leave oil time. The magistrate, in dismissing the case, said lie thought Captain Baggett had been rather indiscreet. If ho had to take such a course again, the magistrate thought it might ho done in the presenco of someone else. “I am perfectly satisfied,” he said, “that he did not intend to steal tho money.”
