RHODES SCHOLARS

THE 1934 SELECTION THREE NEW ZEALANDERS (Per Press Association.') WELLINGTON, this day. The following New Zealand Rhodes scholars have been selected for 1934: Norman Davis, Otago. lan Frank George Milner, Canterbury. M. M. Cooper, Massey College. ‘ N. Davis (born, May 16, 1913) was educated at the High Street School, Dunedin. In 1926 he went to the Otago Hoys’ High School, which he attended for three years. In 1929 he was joint dux, and won a University National Scholarship. At Otago University in 1930 . he passed with marked success examinations in Greek, Latin, French, and English; he had similar success in 1931 and 19,>2, and in the latter year he secured the B.A. degree and a senior scholarship in Latin. The following is an extract from the examiner’s report in English III: “Showed a grasp of AngloSaxon phonology and morphology most unusual at his stage in English studies, and in this respect ho is probably already in advance of most honors students. . . , In pure philology he is clearly the best of the students at Stage 111 in 1932-33,” Outside his scholastic life at the University, he has been a member of the University Tramping Club, of which he was president last year. He is the circulation editor of the Critic. lan Frank George Milner (born in 1911) received his education at the Wnitaki Boys’ High School, where he •mined Junior and Senior National Scholarships, was dux of the school, and finally won a University entrance scholarship. Entering Canterbury College in 1930 lie has each year taken a section of the B.A. degree, completing last year, when he was also awarded the New Zealand University senior scholarship in English. He is this year studying for the degree of master of arts with honors in English. At Waitaki Milner was a school cricket representative for three years, being captain in the last two years, and was in 1929 vice-captain of the football lii'teen. He was prominent in debating and shooting, as well as being swimming and walking champion. He was a school prefect in 1928, and head prefect in 1929, and for three years was editor of the school magazine. At Canterbury College Milner has been an outstanding debater, for two years leading the college team in the Jo'ynt Scroll debate. He has been a North Otago, and a Canterbury College cricket representative, and has played football for 'the College Second Grade team. Milner is a member of the Students’ Association Executive this year, and secretary of the College Dialectic Society. Last year lie was editor oi' Canta and Review, and is this year , associate editor of Canta.

M. M. Cooper, who is 23 years of age, was educated at the Havelock North Primary School and the Napier Boys’ High School. After matriculating he commenced lectures at tho Victoria University College for the B. of Agr. Sc. degree. Ho has attended Massey Agricultural College Since 1929. and this year will be sitting for the final of the Bachelor of Agricultural Science degree. Cooper has been a member of the eollegc first lifteen for the past four years and has represented both Manawatu and Manawhenua at Rugby in the past two seasons. Cooper has been president of tho Students’ Association for two years, and was joint founder and editor for three years of the students’ magazine.
