WAIROA NEWS

(Herald Correspondent.)

The Wairoa Hospital Board is to meet nex,t Tuesday at 1 p.m., and among the business to he transacted is a motion to rescind the present medical by-laws in order to prepare for the adoption of the new set in connection with tho decision to make the Wairoa Hospital an “open” institution. The motion, of which notice lias been given by the chairman, Mr. P. J. Brewster, is likely to he carried unanimously, as on the subject at issue there has been no divergence of views. Widespread regret was expressed on Tuesday evening when it became known that Mrs. Bayly, wife of a well-known Wairoa farmer, Mr. Humphry M. Bayly, had passed away. Mrs. Bayly, though more properly speaking a Poverty Bay lady, was well known to the Wairoa settlors, she having spent many years in residence at Opouiti. Of a quiet and gentle nature, and generous to a high degree, those who knew her best will regret her passing most. Wairoa is all the poorer for her death. The utmost sympathy is being extended to Mr. Bayly and relatives.

Euchre-players were in full force at a tournament held in Osier’s Hall in connection with the tea stall at the forthcoming Paddy’s Market. Mrs. A. Christensen won the prize for the ladies, whilst tho gentleman’s prize went to Mr. Ci aw ford, ren. ’The women’s division of the Farmers’ Union held a very outstanding fair at ,St. Paul’s Parish Hall, and though the weather was far from satisfactory there was quite a good attedance, and, under the adverse circumstances, the results were satisfactory. Among the competition winners, Airs. L. If. Powdrell won a Christmas cake, and Airs. Beauchamp a substantial box of groceries. A former Wairoa boy, Master Piermont Hallweight, youngest son of Dr. and Mrs. M. G. Ilallwright, has won a £SO scholarship at Wanganui College. His brother, William, gained a scholarship at the same college last year. The Clydebank branch of the W.D.F.U. held the last monthly meetin at the residence of Mrs. G. B. Taylor. The competition for best scones was won by Mrs. A. G. Dawson, Mrs. G. Mcßurnie winning the flower competition. A party was held at Burnside in honor of Miss Edie Wilson whose engagement to Mr. Duncan Taylor has just been announced. Games, music and dancing were the chief items on the programme, and in addition a presentation was made to the bride-to-be. Mrs. P. Schwabe, Gisborne, is visiting Airs. G. B. Taylor. Aliss Doreen Hunt, who has so often been successful in tho Gisborne Competitions, has no reason to be dissatisfied with the result of the concert given by her pupils on Alonday night. The attendance was satisfactory and the programme was well carried out, the pupils of the Wairoa district school giving “The Fairy Cobbler.” The accompaniments were played by Airs. E. B. Jardine, and Miss Hunt later thanked all who had in any way helped to promote the concert . The annual judging! of the Wairoa Schools’ Calf dill) efforts took place at North Clyde on Tuesday. There were no less than 60 entries, and the judges, Mr. F. Shaw, of Marumaru, and Air. D. D. Pryde, Tuhara, had a difficult task in sorting out the winners. There was a large crowd of interested adults present, and at the close of the judging Mr. Shaw gave an interesting and instructive address on the subject, and congratulated the young people on their several successes. The prize winners on the whole were of a good type, and with a little more condition the calf in the second place would be a very good one. He hoped those who were not successful on this occasion would strive to be first next time. Mr. 11. L. Barker commended the interest shown in calf-rear-ingi among the school children. This annual display was of great benefit to the Wairoa district, and would greatly assist in raising the standard of calves. He congratulated the children, their teachers and tho parents on the fine exhibition they had witnessed, and lioped it would be tho forerunner of many more to be held right through the district. He complimented also Mr. Lockhart on the result of his efforts. Messrs A. T. Carroll and T. L. Powdrell spoke in tho same encouraging strain. Results August calves.-—First in type: Kathleen Young (Wairoa D.ILS.). First in condition : Basil Glynn n (Marumaru School). Second in condition, Helen Hodgson (Turiroa). September calves.—First in type: lan Bell (Turiroa School). First in rendition : Polly Tuhi (Turiroa School). In addition to the prizes given by the directors of the dairy factory and Air. T. L. Powdrell, the successful competitors received a certificate of merit. Air. R. G. Lockhart appealed to the children to support the classes for them at the \. and P. show, and bo thought, that by show day many of tho calves entered would show a great improvement. The thanks of the. promoters were expressed to Messrs T. Bell (Turiroa), G. Beckett (Frasortown) , T. Hall (Waikaremoana), and T. IT. Kent (Marumaru) for transport of calves, and the Hawke’s Bay Motor Company for bringing the country children into town, also the parents for providing luncheon for tile visiting pupils.
