DECEMBER MEETING FUTURE FUNCTIONS ARRANGED The monthly meeting of the Manutuke Women’s Institute was held in the institute hall on Tuesday afternoon, Mrs. W . A. MeCliskie, the president, presiding. The attendance, was satisfactory, though not as large as usual, owing to several members being absent on holiday or suffering from illness. Routine business was promptly dealt witli, and reference was made to the recent flower show, which had proved distinctly successful, showing a good financial return. The success of the Manutuke Women’s institute at the recent A. and P. Show, in the institutes’ section, was the subject of commendatory remarks. Arrangements for the Christmas tree party were embarked upon, and it was decided to hold this function on Wednesday, December 20, at the Memorial Hall, Manutuke, Mesdames 0. Hamilton, Jones, Rickard, MeCliskie ami Pierey being appointed to the social committee. Ulcmbers were asked to contribute toys for the Christmas tree, and town members were requested to leave their donations at Mr. Findlay’s shop, (dad stone road, by December 16, addressed to the secretary, Mrs. Pullinger.

Cpon the vote, members decided to hold a picnic at Waihircrc on Thursday. January 25. Husbands, families, and friends of 'members will he welcome, and 10 a m. is to he the hour of assembly, each person attending bringing a basket. The roll call was “The talent 1 would choose, and why,’’ and it- was answered by almost everyone in the room, the majority preferring musical talent, whilst others 'desired the talent, of platform

eloquence, vocal ability, or the gift of the caricaturist. The demonstration was floral work, and Mrs. J. It. Read gave a most instructive and interesting exhibition of wreath making. She revealed the secret of simply made foundation frames, constructed from such easily procured materials as hedge sticks fastened in shape with string, tine pretty wreath of Christmas lilies was placed on exhibition, and another was made in the room for demonstration purposes, the flowers utilised being purple irises and linaria. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mrs. Read on the motion of Mrs. MeCliskie A dainty repast was served towards the close, the hostesses being Mesdames W. J. McGibbon. F. R. Hill- W. A. Jennings, Cl. Mavsicano, and James Pirie. The decorations of the social room were artistically carried out- with pelargoniums, calceolarias, ixias, coral, gladioli, and Iceland poppies.
