PLANT TO CLOSE
THAMES GOLD MINE DISPUTE OVER POWER (Per Press Association.) THAMES, this day. '['ho Kimunii Golden Hills Limited low grade ore treatment plant, the lirst in tlio Dominion, has been closed as a result of a dispute with the Thames Valley Power Board regarding payment of power line rental. The matter was previously adjusted twice, the Minister of Mines on the last occasion guaranteeing one month s payment pending an investigation. Yesterday the Borough Commissioner, Mr. C. L.* Grange, received a telegram from the board notifying the expiration of the Minister's guarantee, and that the borough would be held responsible for any further power supply. The _ commissioner advised the managing director of Kuranui, Mr. R. M. Atken, who stated that the company was quite willing to pay any amount when it was due, but was sick of humbug, and had decided to close the plant down. The tables are being dismantled and the motors removed. The company has been assisted in the supply of power by the Public Works Department, and the labor has been subsidised by the Unemployment Beard.
About 25 men are rendered idle and will go back on relief work.
