! RUATORIA BIRTHDAY PARTY j (Herald. Correspondent.) The third birthday of the Ruatoria Women’s Institute was celebrated by a' garden party at Mangapoi, the home <Jf. , Miss Clark, in the Tupawaeroa Valley, j on Thursday, November 30. The weather j had been of a threatening 1 nature for j several days, but fortunately cleared and ! the afternoon was bright and hot. The I heavy rain on Wednesday night accounted for a smaller attendance than was expected. Only 36 members were present, but husbands and children brought the number to about 60. The meeting opened with the singing of the Canadian ode, after which the business was quickly disposed of, leaving everyone free to wander at will. For the monthly competition, best darned sock, Airs. Smyth, and Mrs. Thornton tied. Miss Clark had worked hard to make the -party a memorable one, and her garden was looking beautiful. She and her co-hostesses, the residents of the Tupawaeroa Valley, provided strawberries and cream. Flowers and seedlings! for sale, gifts for estimating competi-' Lions, and many small gifts for the bran j tub, for it was Miss Clark’s wish to I collect money to provide a Christinas' treat for some poor children. The sum 1 of £7 4s was realised, and it was de- 1 cided to send it to Airs. Dick, of the 1 Salvation Army in Gisborne, to spend as she thinks fittest. The estimating com-1 petitions were won as follows Cushion : Mrs. Hogan. Cake: Aliss Richards. Work -bag: Airs. Gray. Box of homemade sweets: Airs. R. Kemp. A most sumptuous tea was served and the birthday cake, made bv Mrs. Gray, much admired and appreciated. At 4.45 p.m. all assembled to accord to Aliss Clark and her co-hostesses, Alesdiunes Burnett, Gray, Nelson, Taplin, B. C. Watkins and 0. T. Williams, a hearty vote of thanks, accompanied by musical honors and three cheers. The National Ant horn brought an ever memorable -afternoon to a close. ! 1 ~ t
