Apparently answering criticism of the Government’s public works programme, the Secietai'v of the Interior. Air. Harold lakes, announced to-day that while there were, some 10.C00.0C0 unemployed on October 1, the number now was reduced to 8.5C0.C00 through the public works administration. Of the, re-employed, about 1.1C0.000 were given emergency employment through civil works administration, but at “real wages,” while the remaining number were employed either on public works projects or absorbed in industry. Mr. lekes generally confirmed the American Federation of bailor's estimates of a fortnight, ago. agreeing that the National Recovery Act had halted the industrial employment decline in the present slack months.
