RUSSIAN BALLOONS
STATOSPHERE ASCENTS AMBITIOUS PROPOSALS
LONDON, Nov. 23. The Soviet's London Embassy announces that a now Russian balloon, claimed to be capable of rising 13} j -miles, will make its first ascent in the 1 middle of December from Leningrad. The gondola, which will hold a crew of three, is built of non-magnetic rustless steel, and the equipment includes an apparatus which automatically measures the intensity of cosmic radiation. Automatic infra-red ray cameras will permit of the earth being photographed through clouds and fog; also the machine “'swallows” samples of air at different altitudes and ‘hbottles” them electrically for subsequent examination. If necessary, the balloon can ascend and descend without human .aid, delicate instruments starting it 'back to earth when it reaches the maximum altitude. The statement adds: “Construction of a further balloon, intended to reach a height of. 23 miles, will be begun in February. ’ ’
