“IDEAL VOICE”

TESTS OF TELEPHONISTS MELBOURNE, Nov. 18. Tests are being conducted by the Postal Department to discover the telephonist with the ideal voice. Already a small group of girls at the Central Exchange, •'Melbourne, lias been under notice, and from their number one girl will be selected and a phonograph record of her voice will be made. The girl selected will engage in a short, conversation, and other telephonists will bo asked to listen to its reproduction with a view to noting its pitch and timbre. For the benefit of those operating country exchanges, the record will be broadcast over the trunk line service. A supply of records will probably be made and circulated to country exchanges so that they may be played on an ordinary phonograph. Departmental officers frequently listenin to the responses of telephonists, and if any constructive criticism can be given a short interview follows. The departmental view is that a good telephonist is valuable, and rare. It is considered that women are much superior to men in this type of work.
