(Herald Correspondent.) The Wairoa Boroug.. council will meet next Tuesday evening. ; Light rain fell over the whole district on Friday, benefiting all but the shearing parties. The evening athletic meeting of tho Wairoa Athletic Club did not eventuate owing to the change in the weather. i

The Mayor, Mr. 11. L. Marker, presided over the annual meeting of the j Wairoa -Municipal Band, which was well attended by bandsmen. The chairman reviewed the position of tho band in, regard to finance, the surplus this year being not quite so good as last year, but lie hoped for a better return next year as a good deal of the past year’s expenditure was non-recurring. He paid a high tribute to the work of the ladies’ committee. The following officers were elected: Patron, Mr. D. Glengarry; president, the Mayor, Air. 11. L. Marker, re-elected; vice-presidents, Messrs. W. Coker, A. Christensen, H. L. Katclifle, A. 11. Heighten and tho members of the Borough Council; acting secretary and treasurer, Mr. J. Quayle; bandmaster, Air. W. Hart; band sergeant, Air. L. Coker; librarian, Air. J. Simmonds; cus,todian, Air. J. Smith; druin-inajor, Mr. ■ R. Ingoe, sen.; band committee, Alessrs. j R. Heise. L. and K. Coker, J. Smith unci G. Hansen; auditor, Air. A. 11. H., Urnvin; hon. solicitors, Alessrs. O’Alalley and Jones; conductor, Air. V. Alhttson. A strong citizens’ committee was also set up to assist the band during tho year. I At tho monthly meeting of the Wairoa Women's Institute there were present about 90 members, Airs. A. G. Nolan . presiding. A number of members of the Wharerata branch were tendered a hearty welcome, Airs. Bush extending an invitation to the members of tin; Wairoa branch to visit Wharerata. The following new members were elected: Alesdames Fox, Robertson, Stacey, Summerfield, and Cam. Airs. Nolan reported on show matters,, and prizes won were handed over by Mrs. Gillespie and Aliss Hill. Airs. F. Hill gave a demonstration of wool embroidery, and was accorded a vote of thanks. The result of tho judging of the best Christmas gift to cost not more than Is was: Airs. Wilson, door-stop, 1; Mrs. Small, smock and rug, 2; Airs Vaughan, coat hangers, 3. Best exhibit in arts and crafts display: Mrs, Halpin, basket, 1; Airs. Forbes, basket, and Airs. Small, stool, tie, 2; Mrs. Ratcliffe, five screen, 3. A! paper on “Olden Times” was read by one of tho members, and the writer was accorded a vote of thanks. The following dispersed afternoon tea: Mesdames 11. Prebble, Alowat, Pinel; Randall, Robinson, Maloney, Alclrmes, and Aliss Perkins.

His Grace Bishop O’Shea arrived on Friday from Wellington, lie is to administer tho rite of confirmation in St. Peter’s Church cm Sunday to about 60 candidates. —Miss K. Sheehan, who lias been on a holiday visit to Afasterton, has returned to Wairoa.—Afr. C. \. Chamberlain, who has been visiting Dunedin, returns about the week-end.—■ Air. V. E. Winter was admitted to the Wairoa Hospital on Wednesday for treat-ment.—-Mr. C. G. Marker, of Waipawa, brother of Air.' 11. L. Marker, Mayor of Wairoa, is making good progress in a private hospital at Waijwikuran. The rowing contest for the Svensen Fours, trophies donated by Air. J. ESvensen, opened on Wednesday evening, and the results were:—First heat: Oilligan defeated Pert hv three lengths. Second heat: A great race resulted between Burridge and Halpin, and n. tie seemed possible, till a collision took place, and the committee finding that Halpin was to blame, the race was awarded to Burridge. On Thursday evening Johansen won from Gay by a canvas, after an exciting race.
