TRANSPORT AUTHORITY

GOODS SERVICE LICENSES APPLICATIONS HEARD Further applications for continuous goods service licenses and Other licenses under the Transport Licensing Act were heard at a sitting of the No. 4 District Licensing Authority, held this morning, Messrs. F. B. Logan, chairman, Charles Matthews, and M. S. Chambers being on the bench. The list of applications was a short one, but the details required by the authority in connection with the various projects were such that a fairly lengthy sitting was in prospect when the proceedings opened. An announcement was made by Mr. Logan, before taking up the list of business, in relation to goods service licenses previously issued by the authority, the announcement being as follows; “Within a short time many of the truck operators who have received the decisions of the authority, will receive intimations of certain amendments to these. These amendments will not in any way materially alter the decisions, but will set out more clearly and more Fully the intention of this authority in regard to its decisions.

“Rightly or wrongly, this authority, together with another authority, was of the opinion that so long as a goods service operator was given the highways within an area decided upon, he also had the right to use all other roads within that area, and likewise if he had a route license over a highway, then he could also operate over the side roads which are not highways. “However, it appears that this idea mav not be correct. Therefore, to clarify the position, we are proceeding under section 34 of the Transport Licensing Act, so that we may clearly define Hie intention in our minds and those of the operators themselves. We will circularise to alt operators a complete list setting out the amendments.” EAST COAST APPLICATIONS

The first license application dealt with was that of Heni McGuire, of Hicks Bay. who was not in attendance. The application was adjourned until to-mor-row, for the production of evidence as to the applicant’s intentions. For Mrs. Nina Campbell, of Hicks Bay, her husband appeared, requesting that her license be extended from the Matakaoa County to include provisions for carrying merchandise between Ruatoria and Lire county boundary, and also ■ to include the carriage of stock to Tokomaru Bay in the freezing season. The authority intimated that, subject to an investigation of the licensee’s finances, the application would he granted. Two Coast applications were set down for hearing, one being from H. A. McFarlane. holder of a mail contract between Tokcmaru Bav and Waipiro Bay. for a goods license for that route ; and the other from H. F. Smyth, of Ruatorin, for a license between RuatOria and Port Awauui. Both applicants were heard favorably by the authority. SHEEP FARMER'S APPLICATION William Barron, a sheepfarmer, who was represented by Mr. L. C. Parker, applied for a license to operate a truck in Cook, Waikohu and Dawn Counties, in connection with three stations in which he was financially interested. Mr. Parker pointed out that had his client known that a license was necessary for his truck, iie would have applied in time to secure an automatic license. The,application was granted, the authority waiving the necessity for making a return of the financial side of applyjjjF cant’s trucking operations, in view oW the fact that the business was solely concerned with stations in which applicant was personally interested. LICENSE FOR A HORSE FLOAT On behalf of Gaine Carriugton, who applied for a license to operate a horse float, Mr. D. E. Chrisp mentioned that in the nature of the business carried on by the applicant, it followed that the license granted must be of a more flexible character than that of the usual goods service. The authority gave Carrington a license to operate throughout an area including the Hawke's Bay and Opotiki counties. AN APPLICATION OPPOSED Opposition from four services was signified in connection with the application of E. S. Rasmussen, of Mangapapa, for whom Mr. L. C. Parker appeared to request a general goods license. Messrs. S. V. Beaufoy, D. E. Chrisp, and T. A. Colemap appeared for the objectors. The application was held over for discussion later.
