ATHLETICS BY NIGHT

FIRST GISBORNE MEET BIG AMATEUR GATHERING FLOODLIGHTING SUCCESS The first night meeting held by the Gisborne Amateur Athletic and harrier Club was staged last, night on the Childers load reserve in the presence ol a big crowd. It was a most successful inauguration in Gisborne, of the noou light system of holding athletic events. The ground was well lit, by four tloodliglits, and, with slight adjustments contemplated by the club, there should be no complaints from the public.' Last ingm, a Jittie dazzle was apparent to the public at certain points, but this will be reetitied by next week, when it is hoped that two additional lights will be installed.

The attendance was the largest that has yet been present at the weekly sports meetings held by the club, whicii should feci gratified with its success. No doubt, many people were attracted by tho fact that the meeting coincided with the visit of the'HALS. Laburnum, and the club could have selected no better opportunity for the inauguration of the floodlighting system.

Prior to the opening, two brief speeches were made, the second being by the Mayor, Mr. John Jackson, who complimented the club on the success ol its efforts.

Mr. H. F. Forster, before asking the Mayor to address tlie gathering, explained that the full number of lights was not yet installed. The four lloodliglits at present in use were to be added to by a further two. In making the arrangements for last night’s sports, and to do so in time for the Laburnum’s visit, it was possible only to have four lights. When the full complement of six became available, the whole reserve would be lit up as if by day. He hoped the decision to test night meetings would be popular with the public.

The Mayor said that when one went back to 1920 and considered the improvements since then, they must realise that the club had been very active indeed. The number of people present was an indication that the public supported the club’s efforts. He welcomed those members of H.M.S. Laburnum, who happened to be present, and be concluded by wishing the club every, success with its efforts.

The installation of the public address ■western for thy announcement of the remits kept the public in touch with the ■vents throughout the evening; no ■natter in which part of the ground they food. Also, tlie Regimental Band was present, and rendered a pleasant programme of music.

Tlie programme was a lengthy one. hut all the events were got off with a dispatch on which the officials are to be complimented. All events were well contested, and many close finishes resulted. One item that attracted more than usual interest was a 100 yards race between a runner and a cyclist. T. Campbell, the club’s cycle champion, was pitted against E. Grant, one of the club’s fastest sprinters. The runner, of course, gained the early advantage, and held a good lend with half the distance covered. By this time the cyclist was getting under way, and gained rapidly.* The- runner won by 6in., in llsec., but bad the course been another 6in. longer the result would have been reversed, so fast was the cyclist travelling when the tape was broken.
