AHURIRI LAGOON

LAND SETTLEMENT SCHEME

Increasing interest is being taken in the forthcoming settlement of the 7000 acres comprising the Almriri Lagoon at Napier, for the development oi which the Government recently decided to advance the sum of £'>o,ooo from the funds of the Unemployment 1 toard. The scheme involves tlm protection of the whole area from tlou.l, drainage by gravity and by a system of pumping, comprehensive reading and sub-division into areas »! approximate! v L 0 acres each. 1 lie hist work which will be involved in too development of the large area will be the construction of the main gravity drains, east and west from the Westshore bridge to Pontile and thence north and south, to cope with the whole of the watershed of the higher country, comprising in the region oi ,".0,000 acres.

I’unips capable of handling 2b,dim gallons of water per minute are to be Installed in the pumping-house for the purpose of dealing with the dcwatciing drains throughout the area which will cope with land of an extent oJ 5421 acres.

In order to complete the protection of the area which is to be developed under the scheme, ample provision has been made for the erection of stophanks to guard the lands from the possible encroachment of waters I tem the Tutackuri River.

The subdivision of this area, which was raised by the .1031 earthquake, will entail the construction of about 211 miles of roads.
