WRECK OF ELINGAMITE TIT IRT Y-FIR ST AN NIVERSARY Yesterday was tins thirty-first anni versary of the wreck of the steamer Elingamite off the Three Kings Islands on November 9, 1902. The Elingamite, under Captain E. B. Attwood, left Sydney on November 4 for Auckland with 194 passengers, and the wreck cost 43 lives, including those of about 30 persons who were in a boat which was lost, and was never heard of again. -

On Saturday, November 8, the vessel ran into thick weather, during which the patent log was fouled, so that the captain had no means of estimating how far he had travelled. At 10.45 a.m. on the Sunday the weather was'Very thick, and it was suddenly discovered that West King Island was directly in front of the steamer. The captain ordered “Full speed astern” and “Hard a-port.” The engines stopped immediately, but did not reverse, and the ship ran on to a rock, from which she subsequently slipped into 24 fathoms of water. Rome of the survivors reached Auckland in the ship’s boats, while others drifted about on rafts for some hours before being) picked up.
