G.R.C. FIRST FOURS FINALISTS EMERGE Two decisive wins were registered last evening in the semi-finals of the Gisborno Rowing Club’s First Trial Fours series, both the successful crews having easy victories. R.. Nicoll (str.), T. Alexander, W. Holmes, and \V. Owen beat D. Alexander (str.), P. Gavin, D. Watt, and I). Gavin comfortably in the first race ol tho evening. From an even start, Nicoll quickly took the lead, which lie gradually increased, to pass the finishing post Wiiji two lengths 'of ■ clear water ’ to' his advantage. As in the above event, the result of tho race betweon S. Btuce (str.) 1 , D. O. Papprill, R. Kinder, and J. Boag and K. Bell (str.), T. McCallum, 0- Hall, and V. Ivess was never in doubt. Bruce, with his snappy stroke, immediately took tho lead from Bell, to lie two and a-half lengths ahead at tho Derby street bridge. At this stage Bell quickened up, but Bruce stalled off his challenge and won by one and a-half lengths. 'I he final will bo rowed this evening, when R. Nicoll meets S'. Bruce, and a close race is anticipated. Nominations ‘‘fori* the Second Trial Foiirs series will dose this evening, and crews will be balloted for by strokes, as is usual after the first event of the season. It is expected that at least 15 crews will go into training for the next club event. POVERTY RAY CLUB 4 IJJ.'i.. j. r- V. *J.TI SEMI-FINALS TO-NIGHT The semi-final round of the Poverty Bay Rowing Club’s first Trial Fours will be rowed this evening, when J McCarthy’s crew will meet W. McLeod’s and G 7 Arderii’s will he matched with K. Harris’. Both should furnish good races,; and the final to-morrow evening will be full of interest. “ Last evening G. Avdern (str.), I. Stevens, A. Gardner, and G. Slivenvood met and defeated N. Jones (str.), T. Muuro, W. Harden and W. Riley. The winners got off 'the mark vdry smartly; and -kept a quick stroke going until they led by 'a length, which advantage they held ff> v some • distance. Jones got his crew in hand after a quarter of a mile, however, and reduced the lead to half a length, at which it remained for' the balance of the course. Ardern responded well to^Jones’ challenge from the. Jlcrby street liridge down to tile finish, and maintained his lead to win joy a shade over half a length.
