MARGARINE INDUSTRY

NEW ZEALAND CRITICISM LONDON, Sept, 13. New Zealand newspapers which hare recently arrived in London report various farmers’ meetings at which reference was made to the margarine trade and its influence on butter prices. It may be taken for granted” \ the comments of the speakers subject are now filed in the cuttings which is, doubtless, kept the head office of the Margarine Union. The Margarine Union certainly exerts an influence on butter consumption, but perhaps it would be wise for producers to remember certain facts concerning this vast organisation. Previously, they had a turnover of margarine of 4600 tons a week. Owing to low prices of butter, this turnover has been reduced by 10CO tons a week. A certain proportion of butter is used in the manufacture of the margarine. Apart from this, however, the combine deals very largely in butter as butter. It has 4600 shops throughout the country, and it buys 15,000 boxes of New Zealand butter a week. Recently the publicity given to New Zealand butter in these shops has been a very satisfactory element of the trade. It may be taken for granted that the Margarine Union dislikes these unfavorable comments on its trade, but it has not ceased to buy our butter and to push its sale in all its shops.— Christchurch Press correspondent.
