WIRELESS PATENTS
SIMPLIFYING LICENSES POOLING PROPOSAL CANBERRA, Oct. 20. Negotiations are proceeding in Sydney with a view to minimising inconvenience and cost to Australian wireless listeners and the wireless industry when agreements relating to the use of patents expire. Since November, 1927, an agreement has been in force between the Commonwealth Government and Amalgamated Wireless (Australasia), Limited, by which for payment of 3s from each listener’s license fee the company grants the right for the use of all patents owned by it in broadcast transmission and reception. . . ' The Federal Government desires to cancel this agreement from early next year. A number of other organisations holding patents have appeared in Aus- . tralia. The result is that as one. transmitter or one receiving set may employ patents owned by several different organisations, it was feared that owners of such .-quipment might have to pay royalties to several different orgamsa- * tioiis. It was announced to-day that a pool- ; ing of patents has been arranged be* tween Amalgamated Wireless, Phillips’ Lamps, Pty., Limited, and Standard Telephones, Limited. These companies are negotiating with Radio Interests, Limited, another large patent owner, in the hope that the combined organisations : will be able to issue a single form of license to cover the use of all the patents owned by them. It is expected that the proposal will reduce the cost of royalties to users of equipment and will greatly simplify the granting of licenses to use patents. If the nepotist, ons succeed only one important holder of wireless patents jwill be outside the pool.
