A TERRIFIC BATTLE
CHRISTCHURCH BLAZE £25,000 DAMAGE (Pur Proas Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. The tire in Weston Brothers’ warehouse, Hereford street, last evening was the most spectacular for many years, and the firemen had a terrific two-liour battle against the Hamcs. For a time it seemed to those looking on that it was a hopeless task. The fire had a complete hold. As the water was sent in through one window, volumes of smoke and flame poured from the others, lighting up the sky till the glare could be seen for miles around. Buildings nearby were threatened by the leaping tongues of flame, and the heat was intense. The firemen eventually, however, conquered. Tons of water took effect, and the towering column of flame died away. Jt was a triumph for firefighting organisation. The total damage is estimated at £25,000, of which Westons lost £13,000. The insurances on Westons’ stock and fittings were £OOOO in the London, Liverpool and Globe office.
