POSITION EXAGGERATED STATEMENT BY PREMIER (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The need for relieving distress amongst sections of tho population in tho Chatham Islands, was tho subject of a question by Mrs. H R. McCombs in the House yesterday. She said it had been pointed out by tho Rev. Mr. Barnett, who had recently arrived from the Chatham Islands, that a number of people there were m a state ot destitution so far as clothing, blankets, and similar necessities were concerned. The Rt. ' Hon. G. W. Forbes said that, as the result of inquiries, lie had been informed that the conditions in the islands as late as at the end ol last month were not so desperately bad as bad been stated. The Minister ot Health would approach the North Canterbury Hospital Board, under whose jurisdiction the Chatham Islands carne, to see whether it was in a position to render assistance.
