VERY BIG FRUIT CROPS
PROSPECTS AT GISBORNE MOST TYPES SET WELL Very heavy crops of most types of fruit are expected in the Gisborne district duiing the coming summer. Strawberries are already coming into bearing. An indication of the position was given by the orchard instructor, Mf. P. Everett, when talking with a reporter to-day, and he said that, speaking generally, tlie crop prospects for all classes of fruit in the district were exceptionally good. In some orchards two varieties of apples, Doughertys and Dunns, were inclined to be patchy, some trees carrying heavy crops with others showing decidedly light settings. Apart from these two varieties, however, all apples, as well as pears, appeared to be setting a very heavy crop. Regarding stone fruit, Mr. Everettsaid that most varieties of peaches, nectarines and plums were carrying crops much above the average. With apricots, however, the position yvas not quite so satisfying, as, in a number of instances, (lie crops were very light. The strawberry crop was looking very well at present, but its success depended on ample and frequent rain during the next two months. Already a few strawberries were coming to harvest. So far, only odd specimens were available, but it should not be long before the berries are available in marketable quantities.
