BREEDS OF ANIMALS
INDENTIFYING COMPETITION SHOW TEST RESULTS A novel identifying competition was conducted at the recent A, and T. Show. Four sets of eight photographs were provided—one set each for horses, cattle, sheep and dogs. Competitors were required to identify the breed ol animal represented in the illustration. The competition really amounted to a general Knowledge test, and was instituted as an attempt to encourage the public to take a wider interest in, and outside, their ordinary vocation or hobby. The interest taken in the sections for sheep and horses was satisfactory, but in the cattle and dog sections it was rather disappointing. However, the fact that the competition was something new, and the difficulty of bringing it directly before the notice of a large number of people no doubt accounts for this.
In the sheep section the following breeds were represented : —Lincoln, Kerry Hills, Wensiey Dale, Hampshire Downs, Border Leicester, Suffolk Down, Southdown, and Romney Marsh. Mr. ,I.' G. Reeves, Tolaga Bay, Mr. G. V. Smith, Gisborne, and Mr. C. H. Cato, Gisborne, all secured maximum points. In the draw-off, Mr. Reeves secured first prize and Mr. Smith second. The horses illustrated were:—Persheron, Hackney, Welsh Pony, Suffolk Punch, Shire, Hunter, Dartmoor, and standard bred trotter. Miss Diana Parkinson, Kaitaratnlii, and Mr. D. B. Reeves, Tolaga Bay, correctly named all the breeds. Miss’ Parkinson won the draw and is allotted the first prize, and the second goes to Mr. 1). B. Reeves, Mr. Claude Parkinson, Kaitaratahi, and Mr. ,W. L. Rutledge, Matawai, share honors for third place with seven wins each. The cattle, Blue Albion, Red Poll, Long Horn, Friesian, Park, Jersey, Aberdeen-Angus, and Southdown, were evidently a harder proposition. The best card returned bad six breeds correctly named, but the effort was too much for the competitor, and be (or she) omitted to add name and address to the score card, and has consequently been disqualified. The next best scores were from Mr. C. E-. Rhodes, Whatatutu, Mr. E. Stokes, Tamaran, and Mr. IT. J. F. Tomblesoii, Otoko, each with five correct names, and the ballot placed them in the above order. Miss Audrey Barker, Te Hapara, correctly named all the dogs, as follows: Sehnauzer, Papilion, Raluaki, Shetland sheep dog, Eedlington Terrier, Kehipoerkes. Kerry Blue, Dandle Dinmont. Miss Barker secures (lie first prize. Mrs. F. B. Barker and Messrs. F. Crickson and C. Parkinson, tied for second place with seven wins each, and Mrs. Barker was successful in the draw for second prize.
