NEW OPERA BY MASCAGNI
NERO AS CENTRAL FIGURE MtiyAN, Sept,. 13--Signor Mascagni, the coniposei, has, been working for years at a. new opera with’ Nero as the central figure, pis work is now finished, and it is hoped to produce it in the coming season. The libretto is based on the five-act tragedy of Pietro Cossa, but- the, acts have been.reduced to Rireo by . excluding the first and combining the fourth and 'fifth. Those who have alreadv read and heard the new work say that bignoi Mascagni has not aimed at creating an opera of vast movements wvith.a gloomy dramatic atmosphere. He has s'qjijjmt, rqther to give his new work a simple character. He would appear also to have felt the influence of the renewed cult of ancient Rome, which now characterises much in Italian life.
