“BY A MIRACLE”
DR. DOLLFUSS’ ESCAPE ASSAILANT A NAZI NO DESIRE TO KILL (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Received October 5, 11 a.m.) VIENNA, Oct. 4. “Escaped death by a miracle is Dr. Dollfuss’ own verdict of yesterday’s sensational incident.. Apparently lie. owes his lile to the presence of mind of Herr Stockinger, Minister of Commerce, who hurled himself at Dertil, and threw him to the ground before lie could discharge his revolver again. The first shot passed through the right upper arm, inflicting a deep flesh wound. Tito second entered the chest t wo inches above the heart, but the bullet had been deflected' by a metal waistcoat button, and lodged against a rib, from which it was easily extracted.
The lleiinwchr immediately organised a demonstration of loyalty to Dr. Dollfuss, . who hopes to be back at work within a week.
Dr. Dollfuss’ forty-first birthday to day was spent in bed reading congratulatory telegrams.
Though the police have arrested five Nazi acquaintances of Dertil and claim to have found Nazi literature in his home, Dertil protests that the crime was not inspired by the Nazis, but solely by a desire to attract attention to ldw .stepfather, Dr. Guenther, as the only man who can save Austria. Dr. Guenther is the chief Nazi propagandist in Styria; but Dertil is not in close touch with him.
It. is now stated that till Dertil’s family, including His stepfather, are Nazis.
Dertil, when examined, denied that, lm was a Nazi. He said lie did not want to kill Dr. Dollfuss, but to draw attention to the fact that he was not a suitable Austrian leader. On the contrary, the Socialists tear that Dertil may lie linked up with the party, and the outrage ’he exploited against them.
